School Year Prayers from a Mama’s Heart – January
With every new beginning is the excitement of new possibilities, new opportunities, and a fresh start. As we pack lunches with our new way of clean eating, zip up the backpacks the night before because we are determined to make this year the year that mornings are not chaotic, and actually remember to put dinner in the crockpot before we walk out the door, let’s remember to sincerely pray for the hearts of the people under our roof.
There are lots of lists to prepare, charts to post and meal plans to execute, but all of these are useless if we forget to go before the Lord in prayer. Prayer is an eternal investment and the dividends are divine.
I’m one of those crazy people who start fresh every year with big goals and dreams. I decide to eat healthier, live simpler, and do better year after year. This year is the same as years gone by, except for one thing. This year I am intentionally focusing on one character quality to pray over my children each month. If you missed the previous months of this series, you can find them here:

This month I am praying for a renewed heart in each of my children. Here’s what I have found so amazing about this process – as I pray for each child, God so clearly convicts and transforms my heart. Yes, children might need a renewed heart, but what about mom? It is so easy to get so focused on parenting that I forget to personally focus on my own spiritual weaknesses. When I take the time to pray for my child’s heart, God tenderly convicts, transforms, and molds my own. What a beautiful measure of mercy God pours out in the midst of motherhood mayhem.

Yes, everything needs to start in prayer. Then the rest is just mopping up. ;) Thanks, neighbor. Joy-filled blessings to you and yours!
I do lots of mopping haha! Thanks for stopping by this morning!
So true, so convicting. If God is going to renew the hearts of my children, I need to let Him renew mine each day so that they will be able to see Him at work!
Yes! Remembering this as I start our first day back to homeschool today! If my heart is easily irritated and frustrated, I’m the one who needs the heart transformation. So glad to see you in this new year, Michele! Thanks for following this series!
Love this idea, Micah. It’s like the “One Word” but for our children. I can get caught up in so many desires and growth opportunities for my kids that my prayers end up a jumbled mess! Focusing on one theme at a time sounds like a great solution. Mine are in their early 20’s so I sure wish I had this a while back!
Yes, I felt like there were so many things I wanted to pray, but I could never sift through them. This helps me to remember some important, specific things I know that we all want for our children. Good to see you here today, Pam :)
Good morning, Micah. We are ‘neighbors’ at the Small Wonder link up this week. I don’t have kids in school any more…but I do have grandkids. I think my daughter in law would be encouraged by your words==you have quite a gift.
Hi there, Jody! Thanks for passing this along to your daughter in law. I hope it’s an encouragement and help! Thank you for your kind words!!
Such a good reminder, I feel like parenting right now is full of a lot of battles and I need to remember to bring it all to God daily
I’m with you, Keri! Right in the thick of it!
YES! Love this, Micah! Agreeing with you in prayer over our children. That God would renew their hearts, and their mamas’ hearts.
Thanks for linking up at Woman to Woman’s Word Filled Wednesday. God bless!
Always great to link up with you! Thanks Jennifer!
Beautiful encouragement, here, friend! I’ve also felt convicted to PRAY for my kids this week. I have a prayer theme for each day of the week for them, but your monthly theme is a great idea. And yes, we need to look to God and examine our own hearts first!
Micah, I just love your mama’s heart! You are a wonderful light not only for your children, but for other Moms as well. Keep shining bright, Love! Happy New Year and GOD bless you, beautiful friend! :-)
Tai, it’s always a joy to see your comments! You encourage me!
Oh, Yes! I get this – my prayers so often turn back on me, like a magnifying lens and it’s a humbling, life-giving experience. Thanks for linking and Happy New YEar!
This is one of my favorite verses that I pray often Micah! Thank you for sharing last year on the Art of Home-Making Mondays and glad to have you start off 2016 with us. May your new year be bright and beautiful with Him as your light! :)
I love this one too, Jes! Thanks for providing a great linkup!
Great post! I’ve been struggling over how to help with my young daughter with her confidence and self esteem and I was reminded the best thing I can be doing for her everyday is praying daily for her. I’ve been praying for the right friends to always surround her and build her up and for her to have great teachers who will build her up and help bring out her true gifts. Thanks for the post! It was exactly what I have been thinking through :)
Kristin, I totally get it. I’m so glad this post was an encouragement!
This is beautiful Micah. I am so glad that you shared with us this week at Sitting Among Friends. I look forward to many more times of reading your inspiring posts. Have a fantastic New Year.
