When You Question Your Calling

Have you ever felt like God was telling you to do something amazing; but, before you could translate a clear message, you talk yourself out of the calling and convince yourself that you must have heard God all wrong? Doubt sets in and questions and fears take over your mind.

“But what will people say?”
“What if they don’t agree with me?”
“What if they think I’m crazy?”
“What if they misunderstand my motive and heart behind what I’m doing?”
“What if no one agrees?”
“What if no one supports my decisions?”

So maybe I’m the only one who has these doubts, but I have a feeling I’m not alone.

Here’s what God is teaching me when I begin to question my calling, my motive, my purpose:

1. If God calls you, He will sustain you.

Being confident of this very thing, that he who has begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6(NKJV)

2. The thoughts and questions that cause you to doubt your calling are not from God.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8(NKJV)

3. When in doubt, don’t worry. Trust the One who called you.

Commit your way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass. Psalm 37:5(NKJV)

Sometimes people won’t agree, they won’t cheer and they might even completely let you know how much they don’t approve, but they are not the one calling you. God is.

Trust His Words.

Lean on His understanding.

Ask Him for wisdom.

Wait.

Take a step when He says to. You won’t regret it.

  1. Of course you aren’t alone, Micah! I have asked myself those exact questions more times than I can count! “What if they misunderstand my motive or heart?” That has to be the one that haunts me the most – because people will. So I must remind myself continuously to be certain I am about His business. Thank you for your words today! #livefree

    1. Thanks for stopping by Liz! Right there with you reminding myself to focus on Him!

  2. Micah, I love this! I can’t even count the number of times that I have BEEN THERE!!! The only thing that keeps me coming back to that calling is the reminder that GOD called me, and He’s got my back! Thank you for this beautiful reminder today! #livefreeThursday

    1. Yes He did! Keep on keeping on, Crystal! #livefreeThursday

  3. This is a struggle that weaves itself all through scripture — in the lives of all who were called. Micah, keep writing. Keep running after Him and secondly, running after that call. <3

  4. Awesome reminder! The things God calls us to often feel crazy. When you question your call remember who called you. Yep, that’s it! :) #livefreeThursday

    1. Thanks for visiting from #livefreeThursday

  5. I love how you worded that. It takes the focus off me and puts it back on God where it belongs!

    1. Yes. He is the reason. He is the focus. He gets the glory!

  6. Susan B Mead says:

Micah, girlfriend, why do we doubt??? We KNOW we heard God, yet we let that little voice whisper distractions…

    1. Choosing to listen to God today, sister!

  7. Yep. Had those doubts. Will probably face a few of them today. Grateful for your words -bound up in His- will be ringing in my ears : )

    1. Me too! Remember God’s purpose in my life each day.

  8. Remembering that thoughts of doubt aren’t from God is so important. Satan is so smart in deceiving us.

    1. Too often, he deceives me. Learning to recognize his tricks. Thanks for reading!

  9. You are definitely not alone! This is great encouragement. Thank you for sharing the verses in the context of living out our callings, so helpful <3 Keep writing! :)

    1. Thanks, Rachel! I hope you have a great day!

  10. What an important topic is this! — Almost all people tend to question God in everything. I think that is normal in humanity. But when we understand that God is the One that can do everything that He wants… we then start to trust in His works. And as you say, if He calls you, He will sustain you. Loved it! I’m visiting you Micah from #RaRalinkup. Blessings

    1. Tayrina, thanks so much for stopping by from Kelly’s place! Yes, working on constantly trusting. I think it works hand in hand with abiding in Christ. It’s not always easy and life can be distracting, but when we submit we are free to rest in His will and His way. It’s a great place to be! #RaRalinkup

  11. I just planned another Prayer Workshop – I have no idea if anyone will come and maybe I’ll have to cancel it, but it’s been on my heart for a long time now and I’m trusting God with it! Thanks for linking with #SmallWonder!

    1. Keep following God’s leading! You’re doing a great job!

  12. Thank you for this encouragement. I’m coming out of a season of wondering, for sure, what God is calling me to do in a few things. I’m good at talking myself out of things so training my mind to focus only on what is pure and true and right vs. the flesh has helped me to grow a great deal in this season. Your words here are simple and perfect to sum that up!

    1. Amanda, I’m good at talking myself out of things too! Learning to listen more and more….it’s not easy for me.

  13. Hi Micah, great encouraging post!! It’s making me think of discerning which of the many ideas are really God’s call..and once I’m clear, my prayer is for His guidance and focus! I hope to know also if any ideas I abandoned a while ago were actually God’s call. You’re encouraging me to go into deep prayer about discernment as I’m at a crossroads in my life and praying for direction! Visiting next door from #smallwonder.
    So glad to visit!

    1. Grace, I’m thankful you were encouraged!

  18. Thank you I really enjoyed this post. – I think sometimes we complicate the issue and let our emotions get in the way. It’s so good to read the truth so clearly and simply put. Visiting from Fridays Blog Booster Party
